Based in Bury St Edmunds, Sporting 87 Football Club was formed in 1987 and started with one adult team in the Bury and District League. Since those earliest days, the club has seen incredible growth and development. Sporting 87 FC is an FA Chartered Community Club comprising more than 40 youth teams alongside three adult teams all now playing in the Macron SIL, with the first team competing in the Macron SIL Senior football for the first time in the 2022/23 season.
Sporting 87 FC was established and founded as a Christian football club and still retains these values, welcoming any child or adult to play and enjoy football, while also aiming to help everyone involved in the club to be the best player and the best person they can be.
The club has more than 600 playing members, with girls and boys taking part in youth football from U8 to U18, as well as running introductory sessions for players from 3 years old. In addition, the club also runs weekly sessions for ladies football, walking football, social midweek football and veterans football.
Considerable support and encouragement is offered to families and individuals, who often see Sporting ‘87 as their emotional home. Many within the club are from single parent homes or have low incomes, and it is the clubs aim to support and help these people. A four strong team of Pastoral volunteers, led by the Club’s Chaplin, offer support to many who are lonely, as well as those with mental illness, addiction issues (drink, gambling etc), bereavement, illness, and injury.
Thomas and Young’s partnership with Sporting 87 for the annual Golf Event, specifically raises money for the clubs hardship fund enabling practical support where needed.
As a Nike partner club, all teams play in Nike kit and in 2016 the club was awarded the Suffolk FA Community Club of the Year. Since the formation of Sporting 87, the club has benefited from partnerships with many organisations supporting the club, to enable Sporting 87 to establish itself as one of the leading clubs in Suffolk.
Building on a proud history, the club also has ambitious plans for the future. Sporting 87 are delighted to be partnering with Thomas & Young as they support the club during these exciting times.
